Welcome to Reddit
What is Reddit?
Reddit is a social media website. Some people say it is like Japan's 5ch.net. However, Reddit has many more users. Reddit is the #11 ranked site in the U.S. and #20 in the world (Similar Web; June 2022). Countries where Reddit is most popular are the U.S., the U.K., Canada, Australia and Germany, but people from many countries use it. With Reddit, you can read, chat and view or share videos and photos with people all over the world. You are always anonymous unless you tell someone your user name. No one knows who or where you are unless you tell them. There are some dangers to using Reddit, but the biggest danger is that you might use it too often. Hopefully, it will help you learn English. |
When you open Reddit.com, you will see a large white space with lines of blue text. Each line of text is a link. At the top of the page, you will see a row of words and phrases. These are topics so you can find the topic you want to read about. The topics are called Subreddits. There are many thousands of Subreddits, and you can choose the ones you want to view. You can also make your own Subreddit about a topic if you think there is enough demand.

Some Reddit basics
1. People who use Reddit are called Redditors 2. When you click on a link, you will go to either ... * a web page * an image * a video (usually on YouTube) * a post written by another Redditor 3. When people upvote your posts, you get karma (Reddit points) |
Logging In
You can view Reddit without logging in, but logging in has some advantages: * You can make new posts or reply to other posts * You can upvote or downvote another post (upvoted posts go up in the rankings) * You can change the Subreddits at the top of the page * You can save links * You can make as many log in accounts as you like * You can create a Subreddit about a new topic |
There is a Reddit app that may be easier to use than the PC version. Kevin recommends that you register and make your own account. He will show you how to add Subreddits to your account. Below are some Subreddits that may be of interest to you.
