Comments on Word of the Day

I used “The word of the day” and “Word of the Day”. Both apps are very similar in name. First, I used “The word of the day”, and my impression was that the words were too difficult on this app. The app introduced the new vocabulary, “honda”, which means “A grommet or other device intended to strengthen or otherwise improve a simple rope honda.” It means “グロメットまたはシンプルなロープのホンダを強化したり、改良することを目的とした装置。(アメリカ西部の方言)”. I can’t understand this word, so perhaps the word is used in the western US only. Maybe it has a meaning connected with the car company, Honda. So I amazed at the app’s difficulty, because it introduces dialect. I stopped using this app, I tried one more app “Word of the Day”. The app also taught me difficult words, but I learned many things by this app. First, the app introduced “transpontine”. It means “橋の向こう・川の南岸からの”. Maybe this word is not famous or useful in everyday life, but I learned new vocabulary and part of speech. [?] The “part of speech” is included “transpontine”, “pent-” belongs to “印欧語根”. And “-ine” belongs to “接尾辞”. There are many meanings in “transpontine”. I learned many vocabulary words and parts of speech! I’ll use “Word of the Day” forever! [Really?]

I used Word of the Day and “今日の単語”. First, I used Word of the Day. There were many vocabulary words, but they were very difficult. I tried to remember the words, but I couldn’t. There were explanation notes under the vocabulary words, but the explanation notes were also too difficult, so I searched for another app. Then I found “今日の単語”. It is a similar app to Word of the Day. The title of the app was Japanese, but the content consisted of English. The difference between the two apps is level. You can choose your level while using “今日の単語”. Of course I chose the easiest level. I thought it was just the right level for me. However, the voices that did the pronunciation were not good. They were Japanese pronunciation or computer pronunciation.
All of words that I saw in the apps were new words for me. I chose three words from those. The first word I learned is “degrade”. “Degrade” means "treating someone without respect". The second word I learned is “adamant”. “Adamant” means "sticking to an opinion". The third word I learned is “colossal”. “Colossal” means "very large".
I think learning one word a day is a good idea. You don’t have to take a long time to use it; maybe five minutes. You can also learn vocabulary words from example sentences. I think it is an effective way to find new vocabulary.

I used the site called "Learner's Word of the Day". On this site, you can learn one English word each day. The site has pictures, some example sentences and audio that tells you the pronunciation and what situations the word is used in. If you miss looking at a word one day, you can check it the next day at the "Visit archive of previous selections".
I think this site is an easy way to learn English because if you use the site just once a day, you can learn new English words without taking a lot of time. And it is only one English word in one day so it easy to remember. I think it is important to decide what time of day you will use this site, because it is easy to postpone if you don't have a plan. I recommend using it before going to bed. I have learned from past experience that memorization is most effective before going to bed. It has been said that memories are fixed and settled during sleeping, and memories made just before sleeping are more fresh than memories during the day. ON the other hand, I am an unsteady worker, so it might be difficult for me to continue doing this.
A word that I learned on this site is "dynamo". "Dynamo" means "a machine that produces electricity" (発電機), Another meaning is "someone who has a lot energy" (元気旺盛な人). The next expression I learned is "off-key". "Off-key" means "not in tune; above or below the proper pitch" (音痴). Finally, I learned "defeated". "Defeated" is used to describe "someone that has lost a contest or game" (敗北) and "a feeling of being unable to succeed or to achieve something" (手に負えない).

I used ”Word of the Day ”. I didn't understand many many words, so, it was too difficult for me. But I think using "Word of the Day" it is more convenient than using a vocabulary notebook. One word I picked up was ”scurrilous”. It means ” disparaging language ” in English and ” 下品な、口の悪い ” in Japanese. The next word I learned was ” "recrean”.. It means ” cowardly” in English and ”卑怯な、裏切りの” in Japanese. Finally, I learned the word ”truism”. It means ”a statement that is obviously true and says nothing new or interesting” in English and ”自明の理 ” in Japanese. In conclusion, this app is a little hard to use. Maybe I'll use it sometimes.

I used EnglishClub. On this site, you can learn idioms, phrasal verbs, slang, sayings and grammar. The meanings and example sentences are written and are easy to understand. I learned the difference between a Dictionary and a Thesaurus. I was also able to learn some phrasal verbs. The first is “take over”. It means “引き継ぐ” in Japanese and “succeed” in English. The second is “take down”. It means “分解する” in Japanese and “disintegrate” in English. The third is “play hooky”. It means “ずる休み” in Japanese and “truancy” in English. I think that this site is good for learning English because I can learn the words and phrasal verbs I don't know. However, it would be easier to use if we could check the meanings of words we don't know.

I used Leaner’s Dictionary for a few days. I learned a lot of words by using Learner’s Dictionary. This site introduces one word a day. This site has 6 categories; 'ask the editor', 'word of the day', 'quizzes', 'core vocabulary', 'most popular' and 'my saved words'. Actually, I couldn't understand the meanings of the words in the ”most popular” category well. There are also 3 subtitles; “24hours”, “past seven days” and “all time” in the “most popular” category. I think these meanings are probably the rankings of words searched in the past. Some words that this site introduces are difficult and there are few opportunities to use them. But I felt this site is very good because I became able to explain the words in detail for when I give a presentation. So I learned some words and I'll introduce two of them.
First, I learned ”shrivel”. It means (しなびさせる、縮ませる), or "become dry and wrinkled from heat, cold, or old age". The second word I learned is “stable”. It means (安定した、変動のない). The English meaning is "showing little if any change" or "resistant to change of position or condition". There are not many opportunities to use these words, but I think they will add to my vocabulary knowledge. All words are written in English on this site, so it is a little hard to use it, but I think that it is helpful. Maybe I will use it sometimes.

I used Word of the Day on the EnglishClub site. At this site, we can learn vocabulary from four categories every day. The categories are idioms, phrasal verbs, slang and sayings. In addition, every vocabulary word has a definition and example sentences, so it is easy to understand the meanings. I think learning one word each day is a good strategy for English learners.
The sayings are interesting, and some sayings are similar to Japanese ones. For example, " Talk of the Devil, and he is bound to appear" is the same as 噂をすれば影がさす in Japanese. Maybe I can search for more sayings which have similarities.
Here are some expressions I learned. First, "play up" means not working properly or causing problems in English and 正しく動かない in Japanese. Secondly, "chockablock" means completely full of people or things in English and ぎっしりに詰まった、満杯の in Japanese. Thirdly, "laze around" means to relax and do very little in English and のんびり過ごす in Japanese. Finally, "play hooky" means to stay away from school or work without permission in English and ずる休みする in Japanese. Sometimes I forgot to check and so I missed some vocabulary, but I'm going to try to check the WoD sites every day.

I started using the WOTD application at the beginning of June. When you open the app, one word is displayed each day. You click on the word to see its meaning. Parts of speech are also displayed. I sometimes forgot to open it, so I could only learn seven words. You have to remember to open it every day. This application is recommended for those who are just starting to study English. People who do not know what to study should install the app because it will help them know English words. If you open the application everyday, you can learn new words everyday. There is no need to watch foreign movies or listen to Western music. It is an application that easily helps you learn English words. {Really?] There are various types of words displayed.
I did not understand the meaning of "fishify". In Japanese, it means "釣り上げる". It means "Pick up and lift it up" in English. Another word "bah humbug". in Japanese, it means "くだらない" or "つまらない". It means "ridiculous" in English. The last word is "one-upmanship". In Japanese, it means "一枚上手". It means "acting superior to another person" in English.

I used the Merriam-Webster Dictionary and Word of the Day apps. On these apps we can learn many vocabulary words by studying one word every day. These sites' good points are that you can learn a word in an instant every day. If you continue, you can understand lots of words.
These two apps are similar, as both introduce one word each day. But you can also use them together. For example, if you are interested in a word on Word of the Day, you can listen to the pronunciation, see the phonetic signs, part of speech and meaning in English. If you want to know more, you can search for the words on Google. You can also cross-reference the words in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary. In this way you can make full use of the apps, using them like an electronic dictionary.
I learned new vocabulary. The first word is ‘‘copacetic’’. It means ‘‘とてもよい,素晴らしい’’ in Japanese and ‘‘very satisfactory’’ in English. Second I learned ‘‘pittance’’. It means ‘‘少量,少数’’ in Japanese and ‘‘a very small or inadequate amount of money paid to someone as an allowance or wage’’ in English.
I think Word of the Day apps are very difficult for me, because everything is written in English. There is no Japanese at all. And learning English by studying one word each day is difficult, I want to know the Japanese meaning, but these apps show the English meaning only. If you capture in a good point is high level English vocabulary has influence on my English ability. [?}

I used the application Dictionary. com - The Word of the Day on my smart phone. This site introduces one word every day. I think this application is very good because I can learn new vocabulary but I felt this dictionary's words are difficult for me. I learned some words, such as “puissant” it means (強力な) [kyouryokuna] in Japanese. The second vocabulary word is “towser” this word means a big dog. It means (大型犬) [oogataken] in Japanese. The third vocabulary word is “paranymph”. This word means a groomsman or a bridesmaid. It means (花嫁の付き添い) [hanayomenotsukisoi] in Japanese.

I think this Dictionary. com is very good and you can learn new vocavulary and you can study anywhere it is convenient and also this application is easy to use because it is possible to hear pronunciation. I usually use to application is [kyouno ichinichi eigo] Today’s the day English. This application is very good because I learn new vocabulary and grammar. It is too introduces one word every day. I recommend this. I think this study method is very good because you can learn English vocabulary and grammar and you can watch anywhere and also if you doesn’t understand this English words mean, you can search dictionary. I think it is very good and convenient.

I used the app "Word A Day". I could download it free from the app store. I tried to use it for 2 weeks, so I learned 14 words I didn't know. This app has the word with a picture about the meaning, so the pictures help you learn the words. And I thought that I could get an opportunity to learn new words with this app. The words I learned are "mawkish", "uxorious", "nirvana", "mellifluous", "ambivalent", "bacchanalian", "peccadillo", "simper", "actuarial", "jingoist", "rue", "scourge", "valedictory" and "resilient". "Mawkish" means people are easily moved to tears (感傷的な). "Uxorious" means a doting wife ((異常なほど)女房に甘い). "Nirvana" means a comfortable place, and people go to there and feel so happy (娯楽). "Mellifluous" means people, who are good talkers ((言葉・人の声が)流暢な). "Ambivalent" means when people discussed something, their opinions are opposed ((~に対して)相反する). "Bacchanalian" means people drink and make merry in the party (どんちゃん騒ぎの). "Peccadillo" means a light sin (軽い罪). "Simper" means that when you listen the story from someone, but its story is nothing important. So you smirked at someone (間の抜けた(作り)笑いを浮かべる). "Actuarial" means a special job. This job is that worker analyze uncertain risk of the future in business by a mathematical technical skill (保険数理士の). "Jingoist" means people are very patriotic (好戦的愛国主義). "Rue" means that to regret something about a sin ((罪など)を悔やむ/後悔する). "Scourge" means to flog a criminal (ムチ/苦しみを引き起こす人(物)). "Valedictory" means people say good-bye to someone (告別の/別れの). "Resilient" means that a boy is in very low spirits, because he wanted to play in a park but its heavy rainy day. However he has just a good idea, so he doesn't sad (立ち直りの早い).
A good point of this app is that people can learn a new word each day, so if I have just a little free time, I can check this app and learn a new word. If you check a word a day for a year, you can learn 365 words, so this app is a good tool for learning many vocabulary words.

I have checked the New York Times Learning Network's Word of the Day for the past two weeks, and I found eight words I did not know. The first one is ductile which means flexible and 柔軟な in Japanese. The second one is ardor which means passion and 熱情 in Japanese. The third one is loquacious which means talkative and おしゃべりな in Japanese. The fourth one is truculence which means something too aggressive and 野蛮 in Japanese. The fifth one is gibberish which means something you can not understand and わけわからないこと in Japanese. The sixth one is subsidy which means money for helping something and 補助金 in Japanese. The seventh one is mauve which means pale purple and 藤色 in Japanese. The eighth one is zeal which means enthusiasm and 熱心 in Japanese.
I have tried to learn new vocabulary words from the Word of the Day since I got this assignment, and I have actually been impressed by Word of the Day because we can learn new vocabulary words day by day. Moreover, I have never heard the words I mentioned today, so I think it is a good way for me to expand my English skills. I am not sure that I can remember every single one of the words that Word of the Day shows, but I want to try to at least check the meaning in Japanese and notice its spelling. I will continue to check Word of the Day like I did this past week.

I tried Dictionary.com. This is an online dictionary website. You can search the meaning of words. And, you can use the site on your smart phone, so, you can search words you want to know anywhere, any time. In addition, this site has Word of the Day. Word of the Day is a system that introduces one new word each day. It is very convenient
I learned new words from Word of the Day. For example, I learned “punctilio”. It means “strictness or exactness in the observance of formalities or amenities”. In Japanese, it’s “細かい点にまで気を配ること”. Second, I learned “transmogrify”. It means “to change in appearance or form, especially strangely or grotesquely; transform”. In Japanese, it’s “一変させる”. Finally, I learned “orthography”. It means “the art of writing words with the proper letters, according to accepted usage; correct spelling”. In Japanese, it’s “正字、正しい綴り”.
This site is good. I can search the meaning words, I often search only for a particular word, but this site has Word of the Day, it is possible to know various words randomly.

I found some vocabulary words in a few days. The first word is ”veterinarian” (獣医). A veterinarian is an animal doctor. The second word is ”scenic” (眺めの良い). Scenic is used when there is beautiful scenery and views. The third word is ”hog” (貪欲な人). Hog is used as a verb when someone's greed is too strong. This vocabulary is not used in a good meaning. The last word is ”sparkler” (線香花火). Sparkler is a kind of traditional fireworks of Japan. In this way I was able to discover some new vocabulary words from the site. It is so simple to use this site. I will try to use it every day.

I used the app The Word of the Day on my iPhone. With this app, I can [lead] a new word everyday and it is convenient. It is easy to study daily English only one word at a time. I can do it in my free time on my iPhone, I think that my vocabulary may increase. I can also read the words that I learned before, so it is useful for review. I learned two words. I learned arborescent. It means [dendritic] ( 樹木(枝)状の). The second was coop. It means [cote] (小屋). These words were slightly difficult. This app will help me learn new words I don't know and it will be good for English study.

I used “Merriam-Webster Learner’s Dictionary”. This dictionary has many merits. First, this site only shows one word per day. Even on a busy day, it is possible to easily learn some words. Second, this site is easy to understand because there is also a photo as well as words. And the image is related to the written example sentence. Third, we are able to have pronunciation practice because we can listen to the audio. Finally, this site shows the words that appeared previously. So it is possible to see the words I missed anytime if I can’t use the site, and I can review.
I learned some expressions; “Made for each other”. It means “運命の相手、お似合いカップル” in Japanese. The literal translation is “お互いのためにつくられた” in Japanese.
English means “have good chemistry, and to be perfect for each other”. The next expression is “make a beeline for”. It means “一直線に、真っ直ぐに~へ行く” in Japanese. In English, it means “in a straight line”. And “minuscule” means “非常に小さい” in Japanese. In English, it means “extremely small".

I used Word A Day Pictures & Audio and Merriam Webster. Word A Day Pictures & Audio is pretty good and useful. There are four vocabulary words each day. This app can explain the meaning of each word with audio. Moreover, I think the meaning of the word can be easily understood by learners of English. You can remember easily because there are only four new words each day maximum. If you keep on using it, your English vocabulary will increase. Merriam Webster is pretty good and useful, too. The two apps are similar, but there is one major difference; the number of vocabulary words per day. Merriam Webster gives just one word a day, so you can learn and remember it easily when you are busy. If you have enough time and want to increase your vocabulary, you can do quizzes ( some word games and true or false sentences).
I learned some vocabulary words; “appurtenance” and “pertinacious”, “Appurtenance” means “something added to something else”, which means [付属品- Fuzokuhin] in Japanese. “Pertinacious” means “stubborn” which means [粘り強い- nebarizuyoi] in Japanese.
I think these apps are a good way to study English. First, I can study and learn English vocabulary in a short time with audio. In the future, if I graduate my university and start working, I won’t have enough time to study English, so when I’m busy, I can study or learn some vocabulary words each day anytime, anywhere in a few minutes. Then, if I have enough time, I can do quizzes on the Merriam Webster app.

I used the application "Word of the Day". It's very useful. Especially, this is really necessary for learning English. In a sense, it's like an electronic dictionary. I think we can search for words and we no longer need a dictionary. I'm going to introduce the words I found. First, "sane". It means conscious of oneself, not a maniac, and in a healthy state, like an ordinary guy. Japanese say 「健全な、狂っていない」. Another word is "rip". It means cut something. "Rip up" is tearing something violently. "Rip off" is stealing. "Rip" has many meanings . Other words I learned are slash, cleave, shred, and clip. So it's very difficult that how to use at situation those words. Then I gonna have to search meaning of those, but "Word of the day" is useful. [The word is appeared relating by site - ?], and if you only touch the word, then you can get the word meaning immediately. With a paper or electronic dictionary, you must look up English words one by one. It's a troublesome job. You know it's troublesome to have to look up words in a dictionary. That's why I say "Word of the day" is useful. I'll use "Word of the Day" from now on. If I forgot my electronic dictionary, I'm going to use the "Word of the day". I'm afraid this is the last time I can't search words that I don't know.

I used Merriam-Webster Learner’s Dictionary. I used this web site on my iPhone. This web site introduces different words and expressions. Today’s new expression is “made for each other”. We can listen to pronunciation and read the word's meaning. The example sentences are short, so they're easy to read. I didn’t understand some words, but the usage of the words is written. This web site is useful and I want to use it every day. I think it is recommended more than other websites. If you use this web site you can really improve your English.
I checked the core vocabulary of sports and I learned 3 new words. They are “amateur” “arena” “athletic“. Amateur means a person who engages in a sport, or other activity for pleasure rather than for financial benefit or professional reasons. (未熟者). Arena means the oval space in the center of an amphitheater for gladiatorial combats or other performances (闘技場). Athletic mean physically active and strong; good at athletics or sports, as in "an athletic child" (競技の).

I learned a lot of words by using Learner’s Word of the Day. This site displayed one word per day. So I recommend that you check every day. It’s possible to see the words that you forgot to check in the past. Past words can be seen for one year. This site displays the word, its pronunciation, the combined parts of speech, conjugated forms, example sentences, and an image to match the meaning. I think that good points are you can hear the pronunciation and there is an image to illustrate the sentence, so you can understand how to use the word.
I learned some new vocabulary words, such as “peacock”, “raft”, “go bananas”, “commodious”, “veterinarian”, and “scenic”. First, “peacock [butterfly - ?] (クジャク)” means a European butterfly having reddish-brown wings each marked with a purple eyespot. Second, “raft (いかだ)” means a flat float that can be used for transport or as a platform for swimmers. Third, “go bananas (熱狂する、激怒する) means to become very excited or angry. Forth, “commodious (広い)” means having a lot of space. Fifth, “veterinarian (獣医)” means a person who is trained to give medical care and treatment to animals. Finally, “scenic (景色)” means having, providing or relating to a pleasing or beautiful view of natural scenery (such as mountain, hills, valleys, etc.).

I tried to use Merriam-Webster Learner’s Dictionary often these past four weeks. This website is very useful because we can learn a new word every day. If you are busy and you don’t have enough time to study English, use this website, and learn one word every day. You can use your spare time for learning vocabulary little by little. On this website, there is a definition of the word, and you can hear the pronunciation. The accumulation of one word each day is important for our own vocabulary. I think if people have a lot of vocabulary, it is very good advantage for their English skills.
There were many words that I learned from Merriam-Webster Learner’s Dictionary. Especially, I will focus on three words. First of all, “bug”. It means to bother or annoy someone (悩ます、困らせる). Also I learned these collocations. “Bug off” means 'Go away' (出ていけ). “Bug out” means to leave quickly (立ち去る). Secondly, “lion’s share”. It means the largest part of something (一番大きい分け前). Thirdly, “tip-top” means very good, excellent or great (極上の、最高の).
I have checked this website every day. There were some words that I already knew. On the other hand, there are a lot of words that I don’t know, so I enjoyed learning words every day.

I used Merriam-Webster Learner's Dictionary, a useful website. You can search the meaning of a word when you want to know new words. You can do it anywhere or anytime with your PC or smart phone because it's free. It might be good for people who don't have a dictionary or people who don't like to carry a heavy dictionary. This website updates every day, so you can learn one new word every day. You can learn many news words if you use this site every day. If you do that every day in a year, at least you can learn 365 words. I learned three words so far: 'debt', 'indulge' and 'gruesome'. Debt means a sum of money that a person or organization has to pay (借金). Indulge means to allow oneself to enjoy something (甘やかす、満足させる). Gruesome means causing repulsion or horror (ぞっとするような、恐ろしい).

I have been using "Word of The Day" for four weeks. This app is very simple to use. You download it onto your cell phone and open it then it starts updating in an automated way.
I'm going to introduce a word which I learned on a historic day. When I opened the app as usual, I found "Brexit." It means the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union. On 23 June 2016 at the United Kingdom European membership referendum, British voters opted to take their nation out of the European Union. This is a word which is a combination of the English word for "Brit (Britain)" and "exit." This is a memorable word for not only me but also for people all over the world. Another word I learned was "zany." It means unusual and bizarre in a funny, comical way; outlandish; clownish (Japanese: おどけた). I will use this word in my daily life like "My father has a zany sense of humor."
"Word of The Day" is a good app to learn English words which you don't know. It uploads the words every day so you can find new words and you don't have too many. It also records the words which you learned in the past so you can reread them. This app is free and you can learn the words anytime and anywhere on your cell phone. Let's build vocabulary every day.

I used the app Dictionary.com. This app is a very useful tool for learning English and it's easy to use. I installed this app on my iPhone. I use this app everyday to check 'Word of the Day', but I felt these words are too difficult. I learned some words; for example 'definiens', 'unquiet', 'shivaree', obsolescence'. The first word (definiens) means especially the defining part of a dictionary entry (辞書の定義部分). The second word (unquiet) mean agitated (不安定な). The third word (shivaree) means a mock serenade with kettles, pans, horns, and other noisemakers given for a newly married couple (お祭り騒ぎをする). The fourth word (obsolescence) means the condition of being or becoming obsolete (すたれかける). This app really works and I recommend it.
I also used the app 'The Word of the Day'. I think this app is easy to use because it's simple and the English is easy. I installed this app on my iPhone. You can learn the meaning of a word and how to use it everyday. I learned some expressions and how to use them. These words are 'I got it!' and 'garnish'. The first expression (I got it) means "I understand." For example, you can use it like this. A: Do you understand? B: Yeah, I got it! The second word (garnish) means " a decoration used with food preparation." For example, you can say this. "The chocolate cake was garnished with fresh strawberries." This app is a useful tool to learn English too.

I used an app called “The Word of The Day” for smart phone. This app introduces one word every day. I think this app is very good to learn new vocabulary. We have prioritized learning practical vocabulary while studying English, but this app tells me minor vocabulary. I think I will use this app every day.
Today’s word is encapsulate. This verb has two meanings. One meaning is “カプセルに包む”. Another meaning is “要約する” . The first meaning is used when making a capsule of medicine. The second meaning is the same as summarize.

Today, I'll introduce some new vocabulary I learned with the app I introduced last week, Word of the Day. The first word is "avocation". It means a hobby or recreational or leisure pursuit. I think it's like a "pastime" (気晴らし). The second word is "postilion". It means a rider mounted on the near, leading horse pulling a carriage who guides the team. The final word is "abeyance". It means like a suspension (一時停止).

On the Android app store, I could't find the apps which Kevin introduced, so I used another app. It's 'Dictionary.com'. This app displays a word on the top page at random like other word of the day apps. Maybe, I think the words that are displayed are difficult words such as technical language. The word that I saw was ''technophobia (科学技術恐怖症)''. It means abnormal fear of or anxiety about the effects of advanced technology (先進技術への恐れ). In this way, we can usually learn the word that we do not know. In addition, a blog and slide show for English learning are introduced. If we like the articles, we can save them. I want to use this app!

I used the app called The Word Of The Day. This app tells us a word and its meaning. It's a simple app, so you can learn English in a short time. I want to reccomend this app to busy people. Today's word is soundly. This word means ぐっすり in Japanese. ”Sleep soundly” is ぐっすり眠る in Japanese. This means fall into a deep sleep. If you couldn't wake up easily this morning, that was ”sleeping soundly”.

I use the site called Weblio. I always use this site frequently. This site is very famous, and it is easy to use. Weblio can translate English words into Japanese or Japanese to English. In this site, we can learn many foreign languages as well as English. However, I have only used the English translation.
With Weblio we can see the meaning of English sentences. And this site displays the words the user searched. We can learn English by various methods on this site so I often check it. Recently, I learned ”comradeship”. It means ”fellow feeling” (仲間意識).

I used the application ‘Word of the Day’. I found some advantages and disadvantages with this application for learning English. The biggest advantage of this application is that you can learn new words every day. This application introduces you some words which can be used in daily conversation, such as ‘makeshift’. It also introduces some terminoly, such as, ‘abeyance’. So you can learn words in different categories. Furthermore, this application provides you one word every day, so that it is not difficult to remember new words rather than provided hundreds of words every day.
One of the disadvantages of this application is that as I mentioned before, this application also provides some terminology that is not used in daily conversation. Since I am an ESL student, it is pretty hard for me to understand the meaning of words that are explained only in English. Also, this application never teaches me how to use the words or provide any examples.
I think this application is one of the good applications for those who can speak English fluently, but for ESL students, there are other better applications to improve their English.

I’ve installed The Word of the Day! on my phone. This app is a common app for learning English vocabulary. I'll give some examples about my experience. I’ve learned some words that I didn’t know. “Encapsulate”, this word has the meaning of カプセルに包むin Japanese. Probably, I won’t use this word often, but it's very helpful for me. Next, this word is I didn’t know this meaning in Japanese at all. "Vexillology" has the meaning of “旗章学”. This is the study of flags. Finally, “soundly”. The meaning of this word is “in a thorough manner”. In Japanese “正しく”. Soundly is an adverb. This word is useful for conversation I think.
This app is such a useful and helpful app for learning and it's easy to use. In addition, notification comes early in the morning, so I can remember day by day. I’m going to study this way because it's easy to use. I will continue to use it.

I tried to use the application "Word Of The Day" where you can lean a new English vocabulary word day by day. This app is simple to use because you can learn new words just after you have activated the app.
Today's topic has a lot of new vocabulary words, so I'm going to introduce some of them. The first I learned was "makeshift" which means "どうにか~する" in Japanese. When you have no time to finish something you have to do, sometimes the result is makeshift. I am a college student, so for example, "My graduation thesis was makeshift because I did it at the last minute." "Trendite" is also my new vocabulary word which means "a person given to following trends," but that is seemed to be a slang word that is constituted from "trend" and "ite."
Finally, I think that the application, "Word Of The Day" is simple and so useful. There is no setting function, and no example sentence for the vocabulary. Though, sometimes, there are some slang words like "trendite," I think you should use the simple fantastic application and build your English every day!!

Last week, I downloaded the Word of the Day app to my iPhone. It introduces English words and some explanation in English. I think it's a very simple app because it tells us only English sentences. (no pictures, graphs or charts) The app is a smart phone app, so if you download the app to your iPhone or smart phone, you can use it anytime and anywhere. I learned some words with the app and I'll introduce them here. The first word is "encapsulate". It means to cover something as if in a capsule. The second word is "piece together". It means to construct something, compose something or assemble something.

I used the app called Heartland - Word of the Day. This app tells us vocabulary words and the meaning. It is helpful for me to increase my English words. The design of the app is very simple and clear, so it was easy to use it. Today's new vocabulary was "grouchy" which means easily annoyed and complaining. You can use this word like this. Don't be so grouchy! I think it is difficult for me to memorize new vocabulary, so I'll try to use them some places, and continue using the app. |
Daiki - June 15, 2015 I used an app called Dictionary.com. I installed it several months ago and it showed one word every morning, but I've hardly ever checked the words. I started to use it for several weeks. I'd never seen most of the words. Probably, I couldn't learn these words, if I didn't use this app. For example, moonbow means a rainbow that is caused by the moon's reflection. I can also check the words that showed within a month. |

I tried to use “Word a day- Pictures & Audio”. I thought it is very useful because there is an explanation about the word with pictures that has a short story, so you can learn the meaning of the word and how to use the word! I learned the new words “vagary” and “ mawkish”. Vagary means an unexpected idea or a flight of fancy like Japanese 気まぐれ (kimagure). Mawkish means emotional to the point of being unpleasant like Japanese 泣き上戸の (nakizyougono). Everyday you can learn new words, so it is good for English learners like us to use it. |

I used the app called The Word Of The Day. This app tells me one English word every day including the meaning of the word in English. I think it is useful for learning English, so I will use this app in the train or in my free time. Today’s word is superannuate. This is a verb and the word means "to retire (someone)." I had never heard this word before I used this app. When I get older, maybe I will recall this word. I will use this app every day, and maybe I will learn many words. I hope my English skill will improve. |

Today's word is naikaku. The kanji is 内閣.This is a word used in government, so it's not one I'm likely to use in my daily life. It means cabinet, as in the Prime Minister's cabinet. If I'm watching the news, I might hear this word when the newscaster is talking about Prime Minister Abe and his cabinet. Here's an example from the Asahi Shimbun: 安倍内閣と集団的自衛権(2014年07月10日 朝刊). The Prime Minister's cabinet is the group of high level advisers and ministers who discuss issues together with the Prime Minister to make policies and decisions for the Prime Minister's office. The word cabinet is also used to describe the advisers to the President of the United States. |

Today's word is kyoushi. This is a good word for me, because that's what I am, a teacher. I looked up the kanji, and it's written like this: 教師. Actually, at the university where I work, the word we use for my level of teacher is koushi, or 講師. We translate this as lecturer. I think the word kyoushi is used to mean teacher when we're talking about teacher as an occupation. It's different from the word sensei (先生), which is used as an honorific when students address their teachers. But I think sometimes the words kyoushi and sensei are interchangeable. Here's an example of kyoushi in a phrase from alc.co.jp: 教師が不足している. This means "have a teacher shortage." |
Kevin - April 7, 2015 I recently added a Japanese Word a Day app to my iPhone called "Japanese Daily Word." The level is a little easy for me, but I think I can still learn from it. For example, the first word was kazoku written in hiragana; かぞく. Of course, I know this word for family. I tried to remember how to write the kanji, but I couldn't remember the second part. I looked it up in a kanji dictionary, and I can see that "ka" is 家, and "zoku" is 族. 家 means "house, home" and 族 means "tribe, family." I think I should write this kanji a few times so I can remember it better. I don't know if this app will help me learn Japanese, but I will try it for a few weeks and write some thoughts here.
